Re: Norwegian boats escaping from Norway to Lerwick 1941

Hi, many thanks for responding to my post and apologies for not replying sooner - I had rather given up on anyone coming back on this one! Basically I’m interested in any information you can provide on any of these vessels - the written records from the port authority are very basic so the more deta...

Re: Submarine Visits Lerwick 1942

Hi Phil, Many thanks for your kind offer and yes I’d be very interested In finding out a little more about the movements of the HMT Loch Monteith during WW2. According to the port records she was certainly a regular around Lerwick, mainly involved with escorting submarines between Lerwick and Dundee...

Re: Submarine Visits Lerwick 1942

Hi Platon, once more many thanks for these splendid details which is allowing me to correct and amend, where necessary, the information that I already hold. Two visits for Junon in 1943 were recorded in the port records as simply ‘FFS Submarine’ with corresponding dates to your data but no names so ...

Submarine Visits Lerwick 1942

Hi Platon, So for 1942 I list visits shown in the port records for the French submarines, Minerve, Junon and Rubis. Once more, if possible, it would be very nice to have those visits checked and details corrected if required for arrival/sail dates, where from and to along with patrol numbers. Once m...

Re: Norwegian boats escaping from Norway to Lerwick 1941

Hi, thank you for the reply and link. I have seen this site before and used it to ensure I had the Shetland Bus vessels but maybe I can also check then for details of these small boats escaping from Norway to Shetland.
Many thanks

Re: Submarine Visits Lerwick 1941

Hi Platon, Excellent information on Minerve and my records for her in 1941 now amended and corrected. The port records were occasionally vague regarding submarine arrivals with the entry simply noted as ‘Submarine‘ with arrival and maybe sail dates, a flag (or not!) and a number or name, more especi...

Submarine Visits Lerwick 1941

Hi Platon,
For 1941 I list only 12 visits, with a breakdown of four British, four Dutch and four French. Details for the FFS Minerve arriving Lerwick on the 04/09, 17/10, 27/10 and 28/11 where from and to, also patrol numbers would be very helpful.
Thanks
John

Norwegian boats escaping from Norway to Lerwick 1941

Please find below a list of small Norwegian vessels noted in Lerwick Port Authorities records as having arrived in Lerwick during 1941 - these are in addition to the list that Warsailors have on this site and hopefully will be of interest to someone. If anyone can identify any of the vessels from th...

Re: Shetland Bus

Thanks, yes I’ve been through uboat.net which has proved a nice double check of dates for submarine movements through Lerwick as well as providing details of several visits which weren’t shown in the port records. At present I have details for 549 submarine movements through Lerwick between 1941 and...

Re: Shetland Bus

Hi Phil, Thanks for your reply and yes the Shetland Bus book has a lot of very interesting details as does the War Sailors site which lists the small boats that arrived in Shetland having escaped from Norway. A very useful source from which to compare names with those shown in the port records for L...

Re: Shetland Bus

Hi Platon, Many thanks for your interesting comments and observations. I had also thought that the most likely explanation for these unnamed arrivals were submarines already in port slipping out and back having been on exercise off Lerwick so it’s reassuring to have a second opinion. As you obviousl...

Re: Shetland Bus

Hi Platon, thank you for your offer and initially please find three missing names from March 1942. I attach a screen shot which includes the other ‘Subs’ around Lerwick at the time. I cannot find any records of British, French, Dutch or Norwegian submarines that could be attributed to these three un...
