Hello,

Waalhaven.
At the outbreak of the war in the Netherlands the ship was in the Rotterdam.
She was unable to leave Rotterdam because De Nieuwe Waterweg was closed by magnetic mines.
After the 'Waalhaven' had been sabotaged (by crew, owner or Dutch autorities?) the ship was confiscated by the Germans. It took more than a year to refit the 'Waalhaven' for the ore trade to Sweden. During her first voyage to Sweden the 'Waalhaven', still flying the Dutch flag, fan aground in the Baltic. Two deeptanks were holed, but the ship could proceed to Rotterdam. On 18 September 1942, whilst on a second voyage from Lulea to Rotterdam with a full load of ore the 'Waalhaven' ran aground on a rock near Rönnskär. After that 600 tons ore bad been discharged the crew abandonned ship on 24th September. They were saved by a
Swedish salvage vessel and landed in Pitea. Shortly after that the 'Waalhaven' was
wrecked.

According Die Deutsche Kriegsmarine 1815-1945 the ship had the Seelöwe number RO 2 assigned to her. The above mentioned story makes it very unliky she actually carried the RO 2 number.

Greetings from Holland, Hans

Hallo zusammen,

ich habe bei meinen Prisenunterladen zu WAALHAVEN:
18.09.42 auf Klippe bei Ronnskär gestrandet.
24.09.42 Schiff von der Besatzung verlassen.
28.09.42 Schiff zerbrochen.

Vermutlich lag den Prisenhof Hamburg ein genauer Verlustbericht vor.
( der Prisenhof war für die Freigabe der Versicherungssumme an die holl. Reederei zuständig !! )

Grüße

Hello Mats,

That was quick :-) The reason I asked was because I saw a telegram, at Krigsarkivet, dated 18.08.42, with the following text:

18.09.42
Dutch steamer Walhaven with a cargo of iron ore ran aground at 1000 hours off KSS 6 (Rönnskär). Salvage steamer has left Luleå.

In another telegram dated 30.09.42

The Dutch steamer Walhaven which ran aground on 18.09.42 has now broken in two. The salvage steamer has landed the crew and stopped the salvage attempts.

Perhaps the information in the telegrams are incorrect with regards to the date.

Hello again!!
Yes, I think the date 16/9 is correct. 18/9 "Neptunbolaget" (s/s Valkyria: Volym 65 Låda 60 Akt 10528)did some try to salvage the wreck. So probably the ship grounded before this date.

God fortsättning!
