Hello Axel and Brian,

I would like to add that SHIRETOKO MARU was sunk on 5.9.1944 not 24.8.1944. At 2315/4.9.1944 TANTIVY actually fired 3 torpedoes at her from about 4000 yds but missed, this first attack apparently unobserved. She closed the range and at 0310/5.9.1944 fired 7 torpedoes at 1500 yds, claiming 2 hits and the vessel sank (confirmed by Japanese Monograph 116). She had been escorted by two "OTORI" class sub-chasers. Anyone can identify these?

Best regards,

Hallo Brian

If the Shiretoko Maru sunk on 24.08.1944 then she was not sunk by air, but by the british submarine HMS Tantivy (P-319)

Thank you and best regards

There is one thing amiss: the carrier's strike on Padang was on the 29th, the ship is recorded lost on the 24th, there may have been an unrecorded land=based attack (unlikely) or the Shiretoko maru sank due to other causes than an air attack.

Hi Axel,
I just got lucky and came across the reference very quickly: the carriers which made both attacls were Indomitable and Victorious (Adm Sir Bruce Fraser), the force also included Renown (Radm Moody).

Hallo

The Shiretoko Maru a. Ishikari Maru were sunk by british, carrierbased aircrafts on 24.08.1944 and 17.10.1944. Correct ?

If correct

what carrier were involved ?
the displacement of the two ships ?

Best regards
