Looking for Hugh Matheson

Can anyone help me to find the death of Hugh Matheson?
He was born in Scotland in 1924 and family tell me that he joined the Norwegian Navy.
He was supposedly on a ship called the Hardanger and I am told he died, aged 18, on 7th May 1942 in Sierra Leone.
I have found a ship called the Hardanger which did indeed travel to Sierra Leone, but it was in the UK on 7th May 1942.
So, I don't know if perhaps the date of death or the name of the ship is wrong.
I realise this is a long shot but I would be grateful for any advice re how I can confirm Hugh's death.
