But the Foxen was lost on 8:45 PM on January 18, while on a voyage from Garston to Gothenburg with a cargo of coal. The explosion which sank the ship took place approximately 85 n.m. from Pentland. The vessel broke in two and sank within 90 seconds. All except two of the crew were lost. One crewmember was saved on January 24 by the Norwegian steamer Leka, the other one was saved earlier, also by a Norwegian ship, which took him to Bergen. Number of casualties was 17. If U 57 really sank the Foxen, she must have done so on January 18, and not January 20.
