Hello Jordi,
Alfieri was on passage from Milazzo to Naples via Messina. She was escorted by the torpedo-boat Pallade and M/ss.51 and MS.61 when,in position 40°05' N, 14°42' E, she was attacked by fourteen torpedo-bombers at 1259/29 July, disabled by a torpedo hit in the engine room and abandoned. Pallade was damaged by machine-gun fire and had 14 wounded (5 seriously).
The three escorting vessels were short of fuel (Pallade reached Naples with only 5 tons of fuel left) and left the scene after picking up the crew of Alfieri. They were relieved by the corvettes Euterpe and Gabbiano (they left Naples at 1635/29 July) and the tug Ciclope which took Alfieri in tow but at 1640/30 July, in position 350° - Punta Licosa - 5.5 miles, she was again attacked by seven torpedo-bombers. She was hit by a torpedo on her port side and sank, Euterpe was machine-gunned and damaged.
I do not have any information on the casualties suffered (if any) by Alfieri and Euterpe.
Best regards,
Platon
