Hi Jordi,

The position given in the official report is 67°32'20" N, 16°37'30" E but this is obviously an error as this position is much further south and inland. The correct position must probably read 68°32'20" N, 16°37'30" E (although probably even a little off). The antiaircraft cruiser was proceeding to Lavangsfjord to provide AA protection to the airfield being built at Skånland when at 1430/26, in Tjeldsundet, her radar gave warning of approaching aircraft at a range of 19 miles. Shortly after she came under air attack from Heinkel 111 bombers of 2/Kgr 100. The bombs were dropped from a high altitude (estimated at 15,000-20,000 feet) and the first missed wildly but at 1524, off Skutenes [I cannot locate this spot on my map] the cruiser was very near-missed by four bombs [perhaps one even hitting the side] and this caused fatal damage. Finally at 1710, HMS Curlew capsized about two cables from shore at the SE end of Lavangsford in 20 fathoms. Four officers and five ratings were killed, three seriously wounded and 9 or 10 slightly wounded.

Best regards,

Platon
