SILJA was one of three British (and not Norwegian) whalers of Christian Salvesen 's South Georgia Co., Leith, being transferred to the Soviet Navy, with SULLA and SUMBA. They sailed with convoy PQ 13 from Loch Ewe to Reykjavik on 20 /27 March 1942, and then from Iceland toward Murmansk. In a big storm on 24/27 March the convoy became scattered, and SULLA sank on 25 March, or was torpedoed by U 436 on 1 April.
