According to Schmelzkopf, POZA RICA was still outfitting by S.A. Ansaldo in June 1940 for Petròleos Mexicanos Distribuidora: at the outbreak of the war, work on her stopped. She was confiscated by the Italian government in 1941 and her management was entrusted to the Soc. Coop. di Navigaz. Garibaldi in the same year. AIDMEN's "Repertorio di Marina Mercantile" mentions Dec. 1941 as her start of service.
According to the latter source, SAN ROCCO was building for the Portugese owner Cia Nacional de Navegaçao as SAO ROQUE by the Cant. Nav. Riuniti at Ancona in 1942. She was appropriated at first by the Cant. Navali Riuniti of Genova (Nov. 1942) then later the same month went under the management of the Ferrovie dello Stato for the Messina Strait service.
