Hi Yves,
according to Cdr Scott's book there were indeed two separate actions. The problem is that he gives no dates for the occurrences and one can only infer which obtained what results.
My reconstruction of the actions is based on the MTBs claim that they didn't actually witness a sinking. I am also unable to verify the time of their attack.
Per my sources, the DD's attack occurred @ 0140/14, which would conceivably allow for the damaged M.83 to sail towards Cherbourg the following night and be sunk by the MTBs BEFORE midnight and still be on 14/6.
If anyone reading this can provide the timetable of the MTB's attack, perhaps we could solve the riddle; in any event, the destroyers definitely attacked first so it is quite possible that M.83 was lost to the MTB's attack and sank unseen by the British.
