dad on torpedoed merchant shp

My dad left on a merchant marine shp from Norway shortly before the Germans came in.
he was on a ship that was torpedoed
I do know the ship sank and he was picked up by Americans
Have no idea what ship he was on or anything . would love to get some info
His name was Arnold Henrik Vedeler Nilsen.
I believe he lived in Stavanger at the time.
He was born in
bergen
