Miramar Ship Index

Decided to create a new topic here -- don't want to confuse newborns with databases...

I've spent much of the past two days looking at the Miramar database and comparing with with the data I've collected over a six-year period from dozens on the full history of each merchant ship over 900GRT that served in the Soviet fleet anytime between 1922 and 1950. That is about 830 ships in total.

While the Miramar database is an impressive and wonderful accomplishment, I find that it does not add much to what has already been available from LRS and Starke/Schell registers. Thus it is missing a lot of information especially, after 1945. Data on the eventual fate of many ships is incomplete -- as it is in LRS. Also, inevitably, it has some mistakes.

Please don't misread my comments: this is a wonderful tool that will aid all of us tremendously. But it does not substitute for careful cross-checking of sources, at least in the obscure area of my interest.

Marty
