I need some help to solve whaler SUDERØY VIIs past.
This was one of the many whalers AS Kosmos / v. Anders Jahre, Sandefjord, Norway had on order at Smiths Dock Co. Ltd., Middelsbrough, UK in 1939.
Before it was delivered it was taken over by The Royal Navy. (bought, requisited or what?) along with the rest of the mentoned newbuilt Kos-whalers. Now this is where it gets complicated as my different sources doesnt agree on which of these whalers that ended up as SUDERØY VII (callsignal LLRH, - which is my target):
Dag Bakka jr. has written an article on shipowner Knut Knutsen O.A.S including his Suderøy whale-expedition in magazine "Skipet" 1.89. On SUDERØY VII he has the following info:
39: delivered as H.M.S. ELLESMERE.
40: renamed H.M.S. CASTWATER
5.46: sold to Hvalfanger-AS Suderøy, Haugesund and renamed SUDERØY VII.
THe same author has published a nice book on the norwegian postwar-whaling called "Hvalfangsten, -eventyret tar slutt" 1992.
On SUDERØY VII he has corrected her past to:
39: delivered as H.M.S. GRASMERE.
46: sold to Suderøy etc.
The Veritas-registers (pr. 1955) has SUDERØY VII (LLRH) as ex- H.M.S. WINDERMERE. But to add to the confusion Veritas also has whaler KOS 27 (LLRD) as ex-H.M.S. WINDERMERE, while KOS 26 (LLRC) is ex-H.M.S. THIRLMERE. Both are built in 1939 and obviously among the abovementioned whalers.
Siris list, where these whalers are listed under Kos XXIV - Kos XXIX (http://www.warsailors.com/freefleet/norfleetk.html#kos3), has traces of several peoples input, but is still pretty cloudy.
Anyway: SUDERØY VII is briefly mentioned under KOS XXVII / H.M.S. WINDERMERE, even if the info is clearly wrong as Suderøy bought the whaler in 1946 and used her until the whole Suderøy-expedition was sold in 1959. She is on several fifties pics.
So, can anyone tell SUDERØY VIIs pre-Suderøy history (1939-1946) like it really was? Thats the challenge.22Skipet" 1.89. On SUDERØY VII he has the following info:
